In the lunchroom of Super Music store, we find Frank Brandis & Joe Roman having lunch together. Just then, a beautiful girl enters.
"Are you Joe Roman & Frank Brandis?" she asked as they nodded, "I'm Sarah Anderson, a reporter for Philadelphia Power Music Magazine." They invited her to sit down.
"You two are why The White Angels are cool!" she said, "Frank's leadership with the band & Joe's singing voice. You both started playing instruments @ 14. How did you meet?"
Flashback to California. A 14 year old Frank Brandis is gliding on a skateboard, holding a trumpet case. Then he heard electric guitar music coming from a garage. Frank peeked & saw someone playing guitar chords. So he got out his trumpet & messed aroung.
When he played, the guitar music stopped as he got out of the garage saying,
"Why are you intruding?"
"I didn't mean to, man." Frank said, "Heard your cool guitar music!"
"What's your name?"
"Frank Brandis."
"Joe Roman." he said asking, "You wanna come in the garage & jam?"
Frank accepted. The two had a jam session. First they played a jazz jam with Frank playing a turmpet solo & Joe chunking chords. Then Joe played a guitar solo with Frank blowing softly. Then they did a rock song, Frank & Joe sang together with Joe playing guitar. They shook hands & started their musical friendship, end of flashback.
"Why do you play Washborn?" asked Sarah.
"I like playing a full hollowed bodied acousitc-electric guitar. Brown sunburst's my favorite color as well, it's a cool instrument. And the fact that Scott Bayer once played it on his 80's sitcom. Scott Bayer's my first guitar hero."
"What about the white trumpet?" she asked.
Flashback to Pizza Man Pizza. Frank got a job bringing out pizzas dressed in a super hero outfit (Pizza Man). He would also entertain kids. One day, Joe Roman sneaked into the place. He ordered a large deluxe pizza & insisted that Pizza Man bring it out.
Pizza man would never do that for adolescents!
When Pizza Man brought his pizza out, he saw his friend wearing a Batman outfit playing electric guitar.
"We have robot entertainment. No live music needed. here's your pizza." he said placing it on the table.
"Pizza Man, can you play the trumpet?" asked Batman Joe.
"No! Pizza Man's not allowed to play musical instruments!" he said.
"Happy 16th birthday!" exclaimed Joe as he presented him with a white trumpet!
"Cool!" he said, "My own white trumpet!"
Pizza Man Frank played a cool tune as Batman Joe accompanied on guitar. Then he blew softly o let his friend guitar solo. Just as they finished, the manager came by.
"What's going on?" he asked as they stopped, "We don't need live music here! Pizza Man's image is ruined, you're fired! As for you, Batman, whoever you are, I don't wanna see you around here anymore!" end of flashback.
"So what happened?" she asked.
"Pizza Man went out of business 6 months later." said Joe.
"I think she means our music." said Frank, "Joe got away from his guitar & took up motorcycling.
After we graduated form high school, we went our own ways. I took gigs playing in horn sections in various pop bands. But I felt that I was meant to be a leader. So I answered an ad for a trumpet player to play aboard The SS Rosita. That lasted a few years & then I moved to Philly to form The White Angels."
"What's next for the band?" she asked.
"We're gonna shoot a music video." said Frank.
"You didn't tell me that!" complained Joe.
"It's a surprise!" he said, "Look who's going to direct!"
The reporter shrieked when the director entered.
Joe was surprised.
"Scott Bayer!"
It was Joe Roman's guitar hero who played on tv.
Joe's got all three record albums, videotapes his music & liked his R-Rated movie, "Unmerry Melody" (Scott played guitar in a jazz band who fell in love with a girl. But his vibes player also loved her as well).
"How do you know about us?" asked Joe.
Scott explained, "I was shooting a movie in Philadlephia. I got your CD, you guys know music. So I thought I'd direct & make a White Angels music video."
That night @ home, Joe & Scott Bayer played their electric guitars having a jam session. Scott was impressed with Joe's playing. As Lou brought out coffee, little Scott Roman was in his pajamas listening to his daddy & friend.
"Scott, go back to bed." ordered Lou, "Liz is fast asleep."
"They woke me up, mommy!" he said.
"You named your son after me?" asked Scott Bayer, "Cool!"
Joe umplugged his guitar & grabbed his son's hand saying, "He also plays guitar. I gotta put Scott to bed, come on son."
Joe tucked Scott back into bed, then he played the guitar & sang a lullaby as Scott was fast asleep with Scott Bayer looking on. As they closed the bedroom door Scott Bayer quipped,
"You like that 2nd Noel tune? Seriously, I think you would be another Johnny Mathis or Tony Bennett."
"Really?" asked Joe.
"Yeah!" said Scott, "The song I have planned for the video's 'Color My World'. And I got ideas."
At Philadelphia Park where Scott Bayer placed the set, The White Angels weren't too happy with the outfits. Except for Frank, each member wore a colored tuxedo (Ben; blue, Jason; red, Ralph; yellow, Eric; orange, Bart; purple & Joe; green), they looked like a rainbow.
"What is this?" asked Frank, "We're The White Angels, not The Techicolor Angels!"
"Trust me." said Scott.
Then Joe saw Bart strapping his white guitar.
"What's the big idea?" asked Joe.
"Joe, Joe!" Scott commented, "You're a star. You need to hold a mike in your hand & sing, no playing!
Do you ever see Mathis or Bennett playing an instrument? No! That's the same advice my manager gave me. And Joe, I know your loyalty's with your friends, but screw the band members!"
Scott then shot the video. He had the cameras on Joe Roman, not on the band. He made Joe look like another Tom Jones. When it was done, the band hated it, except Scott & Joe.
During a break, Frank had a talk with his swollen-head member.
"Joe Roman, how can you call Scott Bayer a hero?
He's tearing up the band with these changes!
Remember, you my be lead singer, but you play the guitar as a team player."
"Screw the guitar & screw the band!" said Joe.
That caused Frank to fight Joe. The band members had to break up the fight.
"Bart, you're the new guitarist!" yelled Frank then turned to Joe yelling, "Joe Roman, you'rrrrrrrre fired!" (ala Cosmo Q. Spacely to George Jetson)!
"Fine, who needs the band!" yelled Joe as he walked off the set. Frank then calmed down & went to see Scott Bayer in his dressing room.
"Scott Bayer!" he said, "I don't like the way you brainwashed Joe! He's part of a band, not some lounge singer. We are a team, I don't ever want to hear screw the band again!"
"That's a wrap!" he said. Frank then talked some more sense into Scott.
Back home, Lou was upset when Joe lost his job with the band.
"Honey, you could always go back to work for Lloyd." she said.
"Music's my life." said Joe, "I'm gonna take my son down to City Hall to get his name changed."
"You'll do no such thing!" she snapped, "Why not take a relaxing motorcycle ride."
He left & in front of his motorcycle was Scott Bayer.
"Don't talk to me!" he snapped.
"Frank wants you back in the band." said Scott, "Frank just pounded some sense into me. Sorry for brainwashing you."
"Why did you do it?" he asked.
Scott Bayer explained, "When I was a teen idol, I played guitar & had a band. My agent wanted me to screw my band & quit playing guitar. So I sang with a mike in my hand. A few years later, I played guitar on stage. By that time, my tv show got canceled. So I ditched music & concentrated on acting. About 5 years later, I played that jazz guitarist in that R-Rated movie. If you come back, I'll shoot the video The White Angels way. Deal?"
Joe shook Scott Bayer's hand. Then Joe remember that his movie character drove a motorcycle. So Scott got to drive Joe's motorcycle with Joe riding behind.
Frank made up with Joe on the set & they started working on the video again. They didn't mind wearing the colored tuxedoes since it fitted the song.
A month later, we find Joe Roman & Scott Bayer appearing on JAZZ-TV. They were being interviewed by VJ Russell Asbury.
RUSS:
We got Philadelphia musician Joe Roman &
for tv heartthrob, Scott Bayer. Is it
true that you learned to play guitar by
watching Scott on his tv show?
JOE:
Yes, I like playing his licks. His R-Rated movie was cool.
RUSS:
Scott, what made you decide to shoot a music video?
SCOTT:
When I did a movie in Philly, I heard
The White Angels play. They really know
music. So I asked their leader Frank
if I could shoot a video.
RUSS:
Frank?
JOE:
He's the leader, trumpet player & my best friend.
RUSS:
Alright, let's watch The White Angels'
1st music video, Color My World. A song
Joe wrote for his wife, directed by Scott Bayer.
The video was shot in the park. Each White Angel still wore the colored tuxedoes as Joe Played his guitar & sang;
"When I met you, my life's a sunny day,
Before you came along, it was dark & gray.
Baby, I saw some colors never saw before,
Now that your mine, I need no more.
You color my world, with paints & crayons,
I never get going till you turn me on.
My head's spinning & get into a whirl,
Cause baby you'll always color my world!"
Frank played a trumpet solo, Joe a guitar solo,
Ralph an organ solo, Bart a sax solo, Ben a vibes solo, Jason a bass solo & Eric a drum solo, each lasting 40 seconds.
After the video, Russ said,
"That was The White Angels in Color My World.
You can catch the band @ Club Philly. I got a cool treat for you, check it out."
For the 1st time on tv, Scott Bayer & Joe Roman were playing electric guitars together. Scott chunked as Joe played a cool solo. Then Scott played lead as Joe chunked.
